School Banana Pikelets

On Friday, using our collective memory and knowledge, Room 8 wrote a Banana Pikelet recipe all by ourselves. The recipe turned out great. We made one small change because the consistency of the batter was too gloopy. We think it is important to have a recipe so that we don’t forget any important ingredients or steps.

School Banana Pikelet Recipe

Ingredients:
Flour, Sugar, Eggs, Milk, Ripe Bananas, Butter

Instructions:

Step 1) Measure 1 cup of flour and sift into a bowl.
Step 2) Measure 3 Tsp (Table Spoons) sugar into the four. Step 3) Mix 1 egg into the bowl.
Step 4) Measure 1/2 cup milk into the bowl. Mix! Mix! Mix! Step 5) Check the consistency! If it is too gloopy add 1/4 cup more milk! Mix!
Step 6) Mash 1 large ripe banana with a fork (or 2 small school bananas).
Step 7) Add banana to the bowl and mix.
Step 8) Get an adult cook the pikelets in a frying pan!

When they are cooked eat them carefully because they are hot. They are DELICIOUS!

School Bananas

Did you know that Parnell School has a Banana tree?

On Thursday Room 8 were food scientists and looked at the difference between supermarket bananas and our school bananas.

The bananas grow in great big bunches. The school bananas look like the letter l and the super market bananas look like the letter c.

The school bananas have bigger seeds than the supermarket bananas. The supermarket banana seeds are so small you can hardly see them.

The school bananas are very ripe. Charlotte thinks they taste like feijoas. Retaj thinks they taste like oranges. Ethan thinks they are YUM.

The bananas are so ripe they are starting to turn black. They are perfect for making banana pikelets!

The Necklace Bonanza

The ABC sounds club worked really hard in Term 1 to learn all their alphabet names and sounds. In the last week of Term, when they were ready, they asked Miss Derhamy to test them and WOW was Miss Derhamy impressed – they had learnt so much!

The whole class wanted to celebrate this fantastic achievement with the ABC sounds club so we decided to have a Necklace Bonanza. On the last Tuesday of Term one we made our names out of beads and strung them on a cord to make necklaces. We decorated the necklaces with ‘magic’ beads.

News Just In

Today we learnt how to share our news in news groups.

First we walk around the class while Miss Derhamy counts down. Then we choose our news partners and sit down with our knees touching. This is so we are always facing each other no matter how many people are in our group and so our voices will reach each other.

Then we decide who is going to share first. If the news sharer stops talking we can encourage them to share more by asking them to "Tell us more!"  or by asking them a question. Once they have shared we can make a comment and then it's the next persons turn to share news.

Miss Derhamy then asks us to walk around the class while she counts down and to find new friends to share our news with.

Thank you Mrs Browne for showing Miss Derhamy this fun way of sharing news in the morning.

News News News

We love sharing our news in the morning and we are getting really good at it. We have been learning how to talk about our news in detail. Sometimes our news gives Miss Derhamy lesson ideas. Here are some photos of us sharing our news.

Making our animal costumes for assembly.

We brainstormed lots of animals and then chose our 4 favourites: horses, dogs, cows and chickens. We looked at photos of the 4 animals and chose one unique feature which would stand out at assembly. Here we are making our animal costumes.

Counting Animals

Here we are adding our farm animals. It is fun pretending to be farmers and doing maths. Pretending helps us learn.
